Live long and prosper …
Every trekkie knows these famous words. But, where did Mr. Spock get that saying? Yes, itʼs a very old saying on Vulcan but where did the television writers and producers find it?
May Adonai bless you and keep you!
May Adonai deal kindly and graciously with you!
May Adonai bestow favor upon you and grant you peace!
Sound familiar? Leonard Nimoy commonly known as Mr. Spock brought his version of the priestly blessing to Star Trek.
The priestly blessing or Birkat Kohanim is recited at Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings and in the reform world in the benediction at the end of our Shabbat services. In this weekʼs Parshat Naso, the Birkat Kohanim is found in Numbers 6:24-26.
God instructs Moses to teach Aaron the Birkat Kohanim which Aaron and the priests are to use to bless the people of Israel.
Rashi teaches us that ʻbless you” means “may your property increase” and “keep you” means “guard you from evil” and deal kindly and graciously with you” means ʻgrant you wisdom and kindness.”
Of these three blessings, which one do you think is the most important?
Me, “May Adonai bestow favor upon you and grant you peace.” Just think, a world without war, without poverty, now wouldnʼt that be a blessing.
